Welcome to the

MOTHER JONES MUSEUM

IN MOUNT OLIVE, ILLINOIS

Experience the history of coal mining, union activity, and labor strife in communities in southern Illinois-

Where Mother Jones walked among heroes.

The Mother Jones Museum in Mt. Olive honors the contributions of Mother Jones, the development of the Union Miners Cemetery, the United Mine Workers of America, the Progressive Miners and the Women’s Auxiliary, and the impact of coal-mining, organized labor, and conflict in the stories of the families and workers who directly experienced these, and whose descendants work to keep their stories alive and relevant to today’s world.

In The photo above, Mary Harris "Mother" Jones appears just above the Bold Page Title. This photo was taken in 1903 in Philadelphia, with children and adults beginning their "Children's Crusade", a walk from Philadelphia to Oyster Bay, New York, to bring public attention to the plight of children working in textile mills.
